Use these rubber thimbles (finger cots) by Bohin for a better grip!  There are 2 in each package and the top is perforated and can be removed to allow fingernails to come through.   They are stretchy and stay put, and they are quite comfortable. 

These are recommended by Sharon for her corded binding technique and other quilting techniques.

Perfect for hand stitching!

I use these thimbles on my right thumb when I hand stitch on my wool projects.
They protect my thumb and help me push the needle through. They stay on my thumb and are comfortable. The shipping was very fast.
