Video Tutorial: Free-Motion Quilting

January 01, 2013

Happy New Year!!

I can hardly believe that it's already 2013! (yep, I just typed 2012 first, and had to delete it. I have a feeling I'll be doing that on checks for the next month or two.)

Ringing in the new year with a new free-motion quilting tutorial sounds pretty good to me. What do you think? Alyssa, from Pile O' Fabric asked me to be a part of her Technique Tutorial Tuesday, and of course I said yes. I met Alyssa at the first Phoenix Modern Quilt Guild meeting that I attended. She's very talented, loves learning new techniques and sharing them with her readers. I'm pretty darn happy to know her, and to be a part of her blog.

Giveaway! Yep, there's a pretty great giveaway over at Pile O' Fabric for a Quilt Halo, Supreme Slider, Bobbin Genies and a copy of my mom's Filling the Spaces FMQ DVD. Make sure you sign up to have a chance at winning these fabulous tools!

This is my first video tutorial. I really hope you enjoy watching, and that you find something useful for your own quilting. If you have any questions, please shoot me an email, or leave a comment below.

Well, let's get to the quilting!

In this video, I cover some basics that I believe are essential to making free motion quilting easier and more successful, which makes for happier quilters. We all want to be happy with our quilting and basic set-up. Using good tools like the Quilt Halo and Supreme Slider can make a big, no HUGE, difference in how the quilting process goes. I also demonstrate a little bit of actual quilting (that's the fun part!), and show how I quilt feathers. Enjoy!

During the video, you may have noticed that I thread basted my quilt. I do thread baste any quilt that I quilt, no matter it's size, using my mom's basting technique. I find that I have more control, less shifting, and that I can start quilting in any area of my quilt that I'd like because the quilt is so secure. My mom's technique also gets quilters off the floor to baste, more comfortably, while sitting at a table. Doesn't your back feel better already? You can watch the basting technique {here}.

I'll make more videos, for sure. I have some more quilting to do on the Peeking Sunflower quilt, and I'd love to share it with you.

Thanks for stopping by!
