Have you been wondering about the what type of impact the new tariffs (coming May 1st) will have on your favorite quilting fabrics and supplies? There's a lot of info being thrown around and a lot of it can sound, well, scary. To give you some reassurance, let's have a chat aboutwhat I know and what you can expectfrom me and Purple Daisies Quilting…
Most importantly, please know thatYOUare my biggest priority and I will always be forthcoming, honest, and transparent about my pricing and costs. Information is my love language, so I'll keep myself updated and will keep you in the loop as things develop that specifically apply to the quilting fabrics and supplies you love💗.
Basic tariff info:
A tariff is an import tax that's imposed when goods, like Moda fabrics made in Japan, are imported into a country. The fee must be paid by the importer before they can receive those goods, like quilting fabric. That cost is included in the wholesale and retail price for that fabric. [Here'sa great video on how tariffs can impact quilt shopsby my quilty friend, Carolina Moore]
When will changes happen?
The newest round of tariffs go into effect on May 1st. These will impact quilting fabric and other imported goods received by importers, like Moda, after that date. My distributors, including Moda and Checker, are keeping shop owners up-to-date on impacted items. And they're prepared to adjust their pricing if the new tariff costs come down (fingers crossed!).
Tariffs have always been a portion of the cost of doing business with international companies. What is very unusual is how the information and tariff rates keep changing so much faster (and erratically) than usual, leaving everyone feeling unsettled and confused. I'll keep looking ahead and will only make changes to my pricing as inventory rolls in with the new tariff costs applied.
My plan, once inventory with the new tariffs starts coming in, is to adjust pricing on the new inventory by about 3-8%. This range covers the great majority of increased tariffs that I know will impact my shop.Let me be super duper clear:The prices in my shop will only change if/when the inventory I receive had the new tariffs applied to it.I WILL NOT change the prices of any inventory NOT impacted by the new tariffs.
One wonderful thing you can do:
The beauty of having a small business is that I can be flexible and course correct pretty quickly when I need to, even though no one could have anticipated all of this to happen like it has.
One of the most profound things you can do is tokeep supporting the shops, businesses, and brands you love. Your support quite literally keeps small businesses like mine alive, especially in a time like this.
You're so important to our quilting community and your continued support means the world to me. Please reach out anytime - I'm always happy to help!
