In Week 6, we'll assemble our Crimson Christmas quilt! Yay!! I'm so excited to work together to finish our quilt tops. This week, I’ll be sharing videos and info on:

  • Layout and arrangement of the full quilt
  • Sewing the units into four columns
  • Matching multiple seam intersections along one seam
  • Strategies for joining long seams

Happy Quilting!

What you need:

All of your partial and full bloom units and leaf units, plus the separate individual parts and pieces for the narrow column on the left side of the quilt.

If you need  to order anything for the quilt along, I put all of the supplies from my shop in a handy Quilt Along category to make them easy to find, plus you can get 20% off with the code: CCQAL2025

Crimson Christmas Quilt Along: Week 6

This week, we'll cover steps 35-36 in the pattern.

The Quilt Layout

Refer back to Step 35 on page 18 of the pattern as you layout all of your units for your Crimson Christmas quilt on a design wall, floor, table, or bed. Arrange them in their final positions to help you keep track of what goes where.

The quilt will be assembled into four columns. The units in each column will be sewn together in order, from top to bottom. Then those columns will be joined together to complete your Crimson Christmas quilt (yay!).  In the video below, I walk you through the quilt layout and the order of assembly. (plus, my sweet dog Daisy makes a brief appearance ;) )

Step 35: Column 1

Column 1, on the left-hand side of the quilt, is made up of the separate individual units. As you remove them from your quilt layout for assembly, keep them stacked in order of assembly (top to bottom) to prevent mixing them up - it's a small thing, but makes a big difference.

Now it's time to sew these units together to make Column 1. This is another time that all your prep and paying close attention to the bias and straight grains will really pay off and make you so happy with your results.
  1. First, align the two units at the top of the column with right sides together:
    (1) Partial 2 ½" pieced triangle unit + (1) 4 ½" pieced diamond unit
NOTE: The flat tips will match and align with the sides and edge (clipping all of those tips is so worth it!)
  2. Align the center intersections and glue or pin baste in place. The seam intersections should cross at the 1/4" spot on the seam allowance. Double check the alignment by rolling back the seam allowance a bit to see if they meet at the 1/4".
  3. Sew the seam.
  4. Press the seam open (release glue if needed).
  5. Repeat each step to join each unit of Column 1.

The two videos below will walk you through assembling Column 1.

Step 36: Column 2

Column 2 includes:

  • (1) partial White Bloom Unit
  • (1) full White Bloom Unit
  • (1) full Leaf Unit
  • (3) full Mauve Bloom Units
  • (1) partial Leaf Unit

As you remove the units from your quilt layout for assembly, keep them stacked in order of assembly (top to bottom).

Joining Column 2:

  1. First, align the two units at the top of the column with right sides together:
    (1) Partial White Bloom Unit + (1) Full White Bloom Unit
NOTE: The flat tips will match and align with the sides and edge (clipping all of those tips is so worth it!)
  2. Align the center intersections and glue or pin baste in place. The seam intersections should cross at the 1/4" spot on the seam allowance. Double check the alignment by rolling back the seam allowance a bit to see if they meet at the 1/4".
  3. Sew the seam.
  4. Press the seam open (release glue if needed).
  5. Repeat each step to join each unit of Column 2.

The next four videos below will walk you through assembling Column 2. In the first video, I share my tips and tricks for pinning the seams with accuracy.
